The Muralism Art in Mexico started in 1921 after the end of the military phase of the Mexican Revolution, when the government promoted mural program, to promote the new ideal ideals generated after the Revolution.

The Mexican government began to hire the country’s best artists to paint murals, calling some of them home from Europe including Diego Rivera. The muralists differed in style and temperament, but all believed that art was for the education and betterment of the people.

You will visit the first government sponsored mural project, which is located inside the wall of the old San Ildefonso College – at that time used for the National High School.

You will see the work of the three most influential muralists from the 20th century: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Siqueiros, called “los tres grandes” (the three great ones). They all believed that art was the highest form of human expression and a key force in social revolution.

Your guide will take you into their work, noticing the main differences among them. You will be able to see the mythology they created around the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican people which is still influential to this day, as well as promote Marxist ideals.

Walk for 2 and a half hours in this incredible journey of art – the Muralism – which influenced the form to transmit messages even today, all the way from the United States to Argentina.
